So, Horror Romances Are The New Normal?

Hey Everyone!

Happy Monday! I’m at it, writing again! I’m on like the seventh scene in my current WIP (Work in Progress) (you have no idea how long it took me to realize what that acronym stands for lol, but people on Twitter (X) kept using it like it was “hi”) and I feel like it’s easier to write now.

I guess it’s true what they say amongst indie authors – writing is akin to a muscle. The more you write, the faster and better you get. Practice, etc. etc…

I know I’m diverging here, but I suppose that’s the difference between self-publishers and traditionally published writers. The indie writers need to publish many works in order to make a living. The trad writers tend to go for the one-hit-wonders. So, yeah. I don’t think trad writers need to exercise their writing muscles because they’re shooting for few works with maximum success.

Anyway, so I’m taking a break and did a bit of research on the common themes in romance books these days… I came across this.

My first reaction: WTF!!!!!!! Horror thriller with romance as the primary theme!?

That’s like eating chicken and waffles and syrup, right? So, I’m thinking your first impression is “man, that’s not gonna work…” And then, you read it and your eyeballs grow big and stuff and the amazingness of the combo just comes over you.

I’ve not really written anything horror-related… But, it’s good to know that this is an emerging genre.

The author of that article says that horror and romance incite the same readers’ emotions… :P. I dunno about you, but I don’t think I’m scared out of my mind when I’m in throes of passion with a character or something? Like, I’m assuming most people wouldn’t want to date if it involves fearing for your life LOL.

I mean, they try to justify it. They say that in horrors/thrillers, strangers meet and put their lives in each others’ hands… and how… in romance books, strangers also meet and end up putting their whole being in each others’ hands / they become ultimately vulnerable to the other person… I mean, yeah that comparison is kinda like the logic I used in my Bagels and Donuts metaphor….

But, I suppose at least it’s believable when they say the plot is more like… you have two people running away in fear, and because of that, they form a bond/connection that becomes a romantic relationship. I like that idea, to be honest. Growing up, most horror flicks always had random sex between two scared people… like that always bothered me because why are they doing this when the audience is supposed to be scared? They always kept mixing fear and horniness.

I suppose, given that “traditional” mix, we’ve naturally progressed to mixing horror with romance books?

Now, I will say, I wouldn’t mind seeing some super weird development where the monster/person they’re running with their lives from ends up being the SO of one of the victims. Not in a domestic abuse sort of way! But, like, LOL: from-monster-to-lover or something?

I might actually try writing that for fun :P. I don’t want to put my Kana in that kind of situation though :/… ehh, who knows, maybe a side character romance or something lol.

Okay! Back to writing for me! Hope y’all have a great rest of your days!
