They say that 20 percent of relationships start out from one person stealing someone else’s SO. That’s messed up – personally, that’s my opinion.

What’s really interesting is they said the people who steal others and those who can be stolen share the same characteristics:

Narcissism

Open to flings / one-night-stands

Infidelity

Mate poaching also leads to dangerous circumstances, like strong depression, guilt, and violence. As well as the obvious physical dangers of confrontation of partners with their cheating SOs and their lovers.

Do all of these sound familiar though? Yes! They’re some of the most common tropes in romance books!

From an author’s perspective, no one wants to write or read about a boring relationship where two people meet on a dating app, then spend normal time together, and then enter into a relationship… I mean, okay, maybe people do… But, most don’t.

What people want is something spicy that will flood their brains with dopamine – risky relationships, fiery relationships – situations where people are facing lots of risk and danger.

So, I feel like, people want to read about relationships with danger elements, such as mate poaching, but don’t want to experience that themselves for obvious reasons. No one wants to be cheated on, no one (hopefully) wants to steal someone else from another person. But, people are going to be addicted to reading about some narcissist main character who enters into a relationship the wrong way.

I guess, this is one example where reality and romance books diverge. And, that we’re happy that this aspect of romance books isn’t so common in reality ^_^.

So, I don’t really have an answer to this.
